How to File Your Income Tax in Malaysia via e-Filing (2026 Step-by-Step)
2026-06-12
Filing your income tax in Malaysia is done online through LHDN's MyTax portal. Here's the whole process in plain language.
Step 1 — Register for a tax number (first-timers)
If you've never filed before, register for an Income Tax Number at mytax.hasil.gov.my or any LHDN branch. You'll need your IC. Once registered, create your MyTax / e-Filing login (first-time PIN may be required from LHDN).
Step 2 — Know which form you file
- Form BE — you only have employment income (salary). Deadline: 30 April (paper) / 15 May (e-Filing).
- Form B — you have business income (sole proprietor / freelancer). Deadline: 30 June / 15 July (e-Filing).
- Form e-BE/e-B are the e-Filing versions inside MyTax.
Step 3 — Gather your documents
- EA form (from your employer — shows annual salary and PCB deducted)
- Receipts for reliefs (lifestyle, medical, books, insurance, EPF statement, etc.)
- Bank account details (for any refund)
- Dividend / rental / other income records
Step 4 — Fill in the e-Filing form
- Log in to MyTax → e-Filing → choose your form (e-BE or e-B).
- Enter income from your EA form.
- Claim your reliefs one by one (keep receipts for 7 years).
- The system computes your chargeable income and tax automatically.
- It compares your tax against PCB already paid — showing a refund or balance due.
Step 5 — Submit and pay
Submit before the deadline. If you owe tax, pay via FPX, card, or at an agent. If you overpaid through PCB, LHDN refunds to your bank account (usually within weeks).
Common mistakes to avoid
- Filing the wrong form (BE vs B)
- Forgetting reliefs you're entitled to — that's money left on the table
- Missing the deadline (10% penalty on the tax due)
- Not keeping receipts for 7 years in case of audit
